Hello All,
With the goal to monitor the status of a port at a particular IP address, is there a practical difference between a TCP ping using the Generic Ping connector (where IP and Port can be defined) and using the Generic Port Monitoring connector?
Would TCP Ping be considered partial monitoring whereas Port Monitoring would be definitive?
Thank you in advance!
In terms of port monitoring functionality there is no difference between the 'TCP Ping' monitoring in the Generic Ping connector and 'Port' monitoring in the Generic Port Monitoring connector. Both make connection attempts to ports(TCP) to check for availability.
What could sway you either way are the other features that come bundled with the connectors.
Landed on this older post as from a newer question: https://community.dataminer.services/question/ping-traceroute-as-validation-tool/
We are still verifying – but basically, the Generic Ping protocol seems able to perform a TCP test (TNC on specific port) but we struggle to get & trend the result (True or False) for the specific port on the Element page.
checking if we have missed something or if any newer version implements the expected behaviour (not much use in adding the PORT if all we get is just the ping result)
When executing a TCP test, success is measured in the connector similar to a standard ICMP ping i.e. in response time rather than a definitive True or False. If the port is not reachable you will get the error "Exception During the Ping" displayed in the 'Ping result' column.
There might be a case indeed to have a new column to reflect True or False instead. You can raise a request to have it added.
Thank you Wale, given they both execute the same tcp connection attempt, I don't see much reason to not choose the Ping protocol in this case.
