A customer asked if in a Failover system both DMAs MUST have the same HW specs and even same Windows OS version, or whether a mismatch is acceptable provided they both comply with the DataMiner System Requirements.

Maybe you can also wait for some further input from engineering, but I would say that this is not a problem.  Of course you have to accept that if you happen to push the boundaries on a beefy primary, you will experience performance degradation when the inferior secondary takes over.  But it's not like there are dependencies on OS level that requires both to run the exact same Windows OS for example.

Thank you Ben. That’s what I thought but wanted to double check since I don’t recall seeing such case in Production. We always recommend the same specs for Primary and Backup.

Bert Vandenberghe [SLC] [DevOps Enabler] commented 23rd January 2021

Indeed, that is correct, the specs don’t need to be exactly the same. Just make sure the backup is also able to handle the load when it has to take over. Also note that the load on the database (and HDDs/SSDs) is pretty much the same on the online and offline agent since they both need to store all the alarms and trend data continuously.
