Visio Dynamic Link to Parent View

Hi Community,

I'm looking for a way to dynamically link a View shape to it's own parent view.

Example, link  inside the Visio of ABC to Hello World

>Root View

>>Hello World

>>>ABC

Does a placeholder like [Parent View] exist?

It would be also great if this is possible with more then one level.

Example, link inside the Visio of 123 to Hello World

>Root View

>>Hello World

>>>ABC

>>>> 123

Currently, I'm working with extra properties, which is a higher operational effort.

Hi there Felix – I've faced this myself a few times and your workaround is the only way I've seen this implemented in the past – subscribing to get more insight.

A feature request had been logged for this, but I'm not aware if any hierarchy-aware placeholder became available in the meantime (would be "go up to level =..")

Hi Felix,

The Visual Overview is optimized for a top-down approach (parent to child) rather than navigating upward. This design choice stems from the fact that an element can belong to multiple parents, which would require a specific selection logic to determine which path to follow.

To work around this, you have two primary options:

  • Properties: Map the relationship directly within the object properties.

  • Generic Scripting: Develop a script that identifies the primary or first parent of a view, service, or element. This result can then be passed back to the Visual Overview, stored in a variable, and utilized throughout your workspace. See https://docs.dataminer.services/develop/api/types/Skyline.DataMiner.Automation.UIVariables.VisualOverview.html
