Hi,
I have noticed that I have an alert for all agents saying that start element failed and initialising the communication of port 2 failed. What causes this please?
Thanks,
Paul
Hi Paul, one way this can happen if the production version of your protocol has changed, and this new version contains an additional port for communication, compared with the older version. This will result in the element.xml missing information to start your element.
Best thing to do is to edit your element and see if there are any red fields there to fill in info. If not still save the config and restart the element, as this will still add proforma fields in the element.xml requiring the element to start, if the port requires no manual config.
Hi Simon. Thanks for your reply.
I have had a look at one of the elements and the only things in red is for the ip address/host for Serial connection & under More SNMP settings for get and set the community strings.
I don’t know what this IP address should be or the community strings, and as far as I know we have never used it. It is the same for all elements,
The SNMP community strings, if they has not been configured to be something different is often default get ‘public’ and the set is ‘private’ for a device agent. The IP address/host field of the serial connection should be the IP of the computer that you are trying to poll information from with the Microsoft Platform Element.
Thanks Simon, I have no idea why they were blank and how long they have been like that! I have corrected those and hopefully that has fixed the fault.
This depends on your DataMiner version. Later versions handle this more gracefully.
