Main differences/aspect between the Cisco generic protocol and Cisco Nexus protocol

Hi.

We are trialing the protocols:-

  • Cisco Manager v 8.0.0.9
  • Cisci Nexus v 3.0.5.18

These protocols seem to have similar KPI's/metrics. Where would you :-

  1. Use one or the other?
  2. Use a compliment of some KPI's from one and other KPI's from the other
  3. Whats the general rule of thumb re this. For example, both protocols use similar KPI's for interface metrics etc. However, the Cisco Nexus protocol has good KPI's / Metrics for Cisco Network routing protocols(OSPF/BGP etc)

Hi Ken,

I believe the answers available on these questions should provide the information that you are looking for:

  • Cisco Nexus vs Cisco Manager
  • Which driver shall I use to control a Cisco Nexus switch

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

TLDR;

The cisco manager is typically used on Cisco devices running IOS.
The Nexus manager is typically used on Cisco devices running NXOS.

Hello Miguel, Ive , All

For #3 of Ken’s ask would these suffice as consideration as a general rule of thumb: Protocol Strengths, Redundancy Avoidance and Device Compatibility?

Miguel Obregon [SLC] [DevOps Catalyst] commented 30th August 2024

Hi Samson,
These two drivers were developed for specific Cisco operating systems. Based on this, I would say there is no general rule of thumb. The driver to be used will depend of the operating system running on the Cisco device.
Hope it helps.
