I'd like to understand better what overview the IDP app has over unmanaged elements that later become managed. Can this newly managed elements be added to the facilities (Location, building, racks etc) for example or this can only be done during the discovery and provisioning process.
Unmanaged elements can be managed when they can be linked to an existing CI Type, i.e. the Provisioning part must have the same protocol and protocol version. When they get managed, no major actions happen, except for registering the element to IDP of course.
With the current IDP version, it is thus not possible (out of the box) to automatically assign the elements to racks for example. (To be complete: specifically for the rack layout, if the elements have all the necessary properties already set, they will get assigned automatically after some time (max 12 hours).
If you did not have the properties set, you could assign the elements to a rack by going to Admin > Facilities > Rack Assignment. In order to see the new managed elements, you will need to follow the below steps:
- Set the toggle button above the table to show the unassigned devices
- Click 'Refresh and Rebuild' to see the new managed elements in the table
- Assign the elements to the racks
- either by manual selection or
- by launching the Auto Rack Assignment that will assign them automatically by making use of an automation script.
Of course, there could be ways to handle this use case automatically, for example by making use of Process Automation. But as far as I know, this is not yet supported, nor is it on the short term planning.
