DMS/DMA redundancy model

Solved1.08K views7th July 2023F5 Failover load balance redundancy

We have a fully redundant DMS with three redundant pairs of DMAs. The DMAs are in different physical sites so we cannot share a VIP between them.

We are planning to load balance the entire system across a single F5. We are wondering how the F5 will know which DMA is currently active for each pair.

Hi Richard,

Having the agents from a same pair in different locations, doesn’t prevent you from sharing a VIP between them. You can setup a ‘Stretched VLAN’.

A stretched VLAN is a network configuration that enables the extension of a single VLAN across multiple geographically dispersed sites. This means that the same VLAN can exist on different switches, routers, or even data centers, allowing devices in different locations to communicate with each other as if they were all on the same local network segment.

With this stretched VLAN deployed, the load balancer can always address the VIP, which will be linked to the active DMA in the pair.

Hi Stacey. A good solution but unfortunately I have no ability to affect a change like that on our network, The standards are set by another team, and so, beyond our control. Something I can suggest though. Thank you.

Hi Richard,

A shared hostname is a possibility in case a virtual IP is not possible.
Unfortunately we have recently detected some issues with this and we are working on fixes for them.  There’s no release version known yet for the fixes, but if I don’t forget I’ll add a comment when it’s released.

More on shared hostname in our documentation.
