Custom Parameter Names in Visio

Solved660 views23rd January 2025Visual Overview

I have set up Custom Parameter Names for some elements

And used the [ParameterDescription] tag in Visio for the Visual Overview – but I have been unsuccesful in figuring out through documentation or experimentation how to display the Custom Parameter Name in place of the protocol name dynamically in the visio.

Is there a solution to achieve this or it’s simply not an available feature?

The example below is DI0 and DI1 should reflect automatically as DOOR ALARM and ROOM TEMP

Are the “names” I’m seeing on the left parameters in your protocol?

Sam Stump [DevOps Advocate] commented 23rd July 2024

yes
For example:

DI0
DI0

Then why not link to that parameter and display its value rather than the one that has the value? Or am I misunderstanding?

Sam Stump [DevOps Advocate] commented 24th July 2024

The value of the parameters is just NORMAL or ALARM two discrete options.

It’s the custom parameter descriptions that are of most interest

The way you tried to set this up is expected to work just like you would want it. I tried replicating it as well and here the ParameterDescription placeholder is nicely overridden by the Custom Name.

I suggest trying with the most recent DataMiner Cube release and if that does not help, reaching out through our technical support team.

Hi Sam,

I would suggest creating Information Template where you can override parameter descriptions. Here is a link to the tutorial on how to:

https://docs.dataminer.services/user-guide/Basic_Functionality/Protocols_and_templates/Information_templates/Tutorials/Information_Templates_Tutorial.html

I tried this and it worked so I hope this helps.

Thanks Pawel for your insight.

Unfortunately as the information templates apply to all elements of the protocol it isn’t practical as we are looking at many ADAM-6060 with different Digital Input Parameter assignments which is where the Custom Parameter names is amazing – except for the Visio limitation unable to read the custom parameters.

so it sounds like the “Best” solution in the abscence of dynamic visio for the protocol is to assign manually created visio for each individual element.
