Visualisation of a Multicast in my network

Solved1.35K views11th July 2023

Hello Dojo,

I’m looking for a solution which can help me to have a better overview of my multicast addresses in my network.

Ideally I would have a visual overview on which I can select a certain Multicast, and that I can then see all the different devices that Multicast is known on/goes through.

Kind regards,

Hi Yasser,

Adding to the info above, we can visualize flow data on DataMiner Cube as well as on dashboards. The latter allow you to share flow data with anybody in your organization, or any of your customers and suppliers.

Now in terms of the flow data, there's always 2 scenario's to consider:

  1. Visualize just any multicast that is currently on the network

Often used to troubleshoot IT networks and for security audits, operators can query a port for all actual flows, select one and DataMiner would visualize the flow. The processing behind can be very different, of course considering the amount of that can be collected. Most often, DataMiner can either retrieve info of the selected MC from its streaming telemetry database (Netflow, sFlow, jFlow, ...). That database is usually containing data from a few days or weeks, but no longer. Of course, DataMiner can also query the network in real time, and 'reverse engineer' the actual flow by collecting info from MC routing tables and all of that. Example here : NetFlow - DataMiner Dojo

2. Visualize a provisioned flow

In this scenario, DataMiner can not only show the signal path on Cube or HTML dashboards, but also show the actual and historical KPI's (bitrates, packet loss, corrected errors, CS errors, etc). Since the MC flow is expected to be on the network, DataMiner can continuously monitor the flow. DataMiner knows about the provisioned flows either because DataMiner is the orchestrator and has actually configured the flow on the network (SDN control), either DataMiner can read such info from external databases (e.g. CMDB). Example here Media flow tracking & analytics - DataMiner Dojo

Of course, 1 and 2 can co-exist on DataMiner, giving the richest experience to visualize the as-is flows and the provisioned flows on a single screen.

In terms of visualization, of course we have the rich DataMiner Cube flow visualization.

But adding to this, we're also continuously expanding our HTML dashboards. In particular, a graphical node-edge component already exists that displays physical and flow information. We're still working to add more features to make flow selection and visualization better though. Feel free to share more info on your project so that we can discuss. You can find a nice example here : Cisco Nexus APP - DataMiner Dojo

KR, Steven

Dear Yasser,
Flow technologies like sFlow or netFlow are used to detect in real time where these multicast streams effectively occur for every single network ingress interface. By also reading routing and snooping tables via the switch vendor’s native APIs to check the traffic on the egress interface, the path of every flow can be visualized, so that a full picture from source to each destination is presented in real time to operators. The destination edge device itself must be checked as well for its multicast receiving IP addresses.

More detailed information about these already in our community at  Multicast flow monitoring

Also, please read article from Thomas Gunkel (in this context) if you look at Media Flow monitoring

I will be glad to help you further.

Dear pramod,
Thank you for your feedback, how can I get demo and more details about netflow?

Hi Yasser,
Thanks for your response.

I will setup a call with you early next week to discuss about this in detail.
