Dear All,
We are migrating our dataminer system to a new virtual environment and the old database machines (running Cassandra and ElasticSearch) run under Windows. Skyline now recommend using Ubuntu Linux as the OS for the database machines but my organisation is using Redhat 9.2. Does anyone know if Cassandra and ElasticSearch will run under that version of Linux?
Thanks for any support you can give,
Matt
Hi Matthew,
Yes, the Apache Cassandra website explicitly mentions that it is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. The compatibility page states:
"Apache Cassandra is a highly scalable, distributed NoSQL database that can be deployed on a wide range of platforms, including Linux, Windows, and macOS. Cassandra is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9."
As of October, 2022, Elasticsearch 6.8 is not officially supported on RHEL 9.2. The latest officially supported version of Elasticsearch for RHEL 9.2 is 7.17 and this ElasticSearch version is not officially supported by DataMiner SW.
But this migration should trigger you to migrate from ElasticSearch towards OpenSearch instead. OpenSearch is very similar compared to ElasticSearch and it should be quite straight forward to migrate the dataset from one to the other.
OpenSearch is very likely already compatible with RHEL 9.2 although it is not explicitly mentioned as a supported operating system on the official OpenSearch documentation website just yet. The documentation lists the recommended RHEL versions as 7 and 8, even for the latest 2.x versions of OpenSearch. However, there have been reports of OpenSearch working on RHEL 9.2. It will be important to test drive this before putting it in production but I believe it's just a matter of time before OpenSearch officially announces its compatibility with RHEL 9.
Hope this helps!
Dear Jeroen,
This was a big help, thanks a lot. Based on your feedback we are now experimenting with different Linux version and db combinations.
Thanks again and best regards,
Matt
