migration from database per agent to Database per cluster on 10.1

We've currently stuck on 10.1 due to hardware limitations, could there be any issues down the line if we migrate to a Cassandra only database per cluster setup from the existing Cassandra only per agent, to when we can upgrade to 10.4 or greater and want to add an OpenSearch database per cluster to move the alarm data support SRM etc?

Hi Philip,

Based on your description where you are currently running Cassandra and DataMiner on the same machine without indexing, you could move into any configuration described here (Separate Cassandra setup without indexing | DataMiner Docs), which is still not a recommended setup for a production system.

To migrate to a single Cassandra cluster for your entire DMS, you will need an indexing database as described here: (Dedicated clustered storage | DataMiner Docs).

If I understand your situation correctly, these are some of the possible options:

  1. Use STaaS (Storage as a Service (STaaS) | DataMiner Docs) instead of self-hosted storage, which allows you to immediately upgrade your DMS to the latest and greatest version.
  2. Wait until enough hardware is available to allocate at least three machines to the indexing database alongside Cassandra (Configuring dedicated clustered storage | DataMiner Docs)

Thanks,

Hi Rene,

Several of our servers regularly lose connection to the rest of the cluster, so as soon as we go to a version using NATs for the inter DMA communications the SL services lock up regularly, requiring a full server reboot to resolve, so not a health place to be on a production environment.

I see from the first link Cassandra cluster is only supported with indexing, so that out for the moment, unless we build clusters per DMA pair in our prod cluster.
Is STaaS available on 10.1?

Hi Philip, correct it is not possible to migrate to a single Cassandra cluster without an indexing Database.

To use STaaS the system would have to be migrated to 10.3.10 [CU1] or higher and be connected to the DataMiner Services.

Technical details can be found here:
– STaaS: (https://docs.dataminer.services/user-guide/Advanced_Functionality/Databases/STaaS/STaaS.html).
– DataMiner Services: (https://docs.dataminer.services/user-guide/Cloud_Platform/Connecting_to_cloud/Connecting_your_DataMiner_System_to_the_cloud.html)

If you consider StaaS and have any specific questions, please reach out to the dedicated support team (staas@dataminer.services) and they will be glad to assist you.
