Microsoft Platform Driver – Reducing Polling time

491 views18th December 2024Cavena STU Microsoft Platform Reduce Polling time

We are currently experiencing delays in the update times for the Cavena STU and Cavena S-MUX application process on the (Microsoft Platform driver) task manager page. To improve this, we would like to propose reducing the polling time from 20 minutes to 5 minutes. However, we understand that the Microsoft platform does not offer a configurable polling time. Therefore, any change in polling frequency would require adjustments in the code.

Before proceeding, we would like to understand the potential impact of reducing the polling time drastically from 20 minutes to 5 minutes. Specifically, we are concerned about the following:

  • Impact on system performance: Would a 5-minute polling interval create a strain on resources or affect the performance of the Cavena STU or S-MUX applications?
  • Alternative solutions: Is there any other approach we could follow to achieve better update times for the Cavena STU and S-MUX applications without significantly altering the polling time or risking performance issues?

We would greatly appreciate your insights and any recommendations you may have.

Hi Srimathi,

I had a look at the connector and the task manager is polled every 10 seconds (in average). Please could you provide us more details about the delay that you are experiencing:

  • Maybe a specific column in the task manager is not updated frequently?
  • Are you using nominal values, or cumulated memory?
  • Do you have a trend template assigned to this element, and if so, did you enable the real-time trending?

Thanks!

Hi Miguel,
Sorry for responding late to your questions ,
We are not using any nominal value or cumulated memory configuration. And there is no Trend template being assigned for the element.

Hi Srimathi,
Thanks for the information. As mentioned in my answer, the Task Manager is polled every 10 seconds (in average), so I would expect that values are updated at that frequency. Based on this, no changes are required in the Microsoft Platform connector to meet your requirements.

Something that it is not clear to me is how do you notice the delay. I was under the impression that you only enabled average trending. Please could you enable real time trending and verify the delay in the trend chart for the processes Cavena STU and Cavena S-MUX?

If you notice the delay in the trend chart, we will need to further investigate what could be the possible cause of this issue. Please if you can contact Techsupport (techsupport@skyline.be) to further investigate this issue.

Hi Srimathi,

Thank you for raising these important questions. While this isn’t a complete answer to your question, I’d like to address your first point regarding the feasibility of reducing the polling time without requiring code changes.

You can achieve this by adjusting the [Timer Base] parameter under the General Parameters section. Modifying this parameter allows you to effectively reduce the polling time, which could improve update intervals without the need for direct changes in the connector code.

For detailed guidance, you can refer to the relevant documentation: Changing the polling speed of an element | DataMiner Docs
