As far as I know, there’s no official preference.

On the official website, there is however a matrix that can be used to check if the distro you like is available for the given Elasticsearch version (at the point of writing this, DataMiner supports 6.8.x): https://www.elastic.co/support/matrix

https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/install-elasticsearch.html provides the formats that Elasticsearch provides. Typically, Linux installations comes with the options of using the archive (tar.gz) package, Debian and rpm packages. You can use the archive for all the Linux distributions, but the rest are specific to certain Linux distributions.

Other than the popular Linux distributions enterprises use (matrix page shows these), there are plenty of other distributions that anyone can explore. You can use https://distrowatch.com/ to see the popular Linux distributions and this has been in place since early 2000’s.
