Hi Tim, to my knowledge nothing on a technical level is preventing you to run all communication over a single network (VLAN or standard LAN). The question is more whether this is desired or not due to certain bottleneck situations which might occur on available bandwidth level. This answer can only be concluded after an evaluation by a skilled system architect who can identify the different variables and establish whether it would form a problem or not.
