Visio: Find Element Name or ID from Resource / Function name

Solved591 views18th July 2024

Hello,

I have a table for a protocol which I am using to generate shapes dynamically.

In the table is stored a list of resource names and I am able to access the resource / function name directly in the visio view from a table param.

The resources are linked to an ID for the DVE and the DVE has a visio page which I want to open on a button press (this part is working if element id is defined statically).

I wondered if from a visio view there is a way to retrieve the linked element from a resource based on the resource name, allowing me to determine which element to link my button press.

Many thanks

Oliver

Hi Oliver,
Do you still need assistance with this? If yes, could you answer the questions from Koen’s comment below? Or if not, could you select the answer to indicate that the question is resolved?

Hi Oliver,

I don't think it matters whether it concerns a real element or a "Resource" element.  As long as you have the correct name of the (resource) element in your table it should be possible to link a shape with "Element" shape data and make sure it contains the correct name of the (resource) element in the value.  This should work both by name and element ID.

Cheers,

Koen.

Hi Koen,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I should have made it clearer in my initial question, the name of the element is not the same as the name of the resource and I only have access to the name of the resource from within my visio view. It may be that we have to rename the resources but would prefer not to if we don’t have to as the element names correspond to a physical card which does not match up with the virtual numbering that we are using

Many thanks
Oliver

I see. So the name of the Resource in your Table does not exactly match with the name of the corresponding (dve) element. And you only have the Resource name in that table? There are no hidden columns which have the ID?
It might help if you could add some screenshots of that table to see how the resource name links to the element name.
