high availablity for some devices/elements

Solved1.26K views19th July 2023backup DMA Failover

Hello,

we do know the 1+1 setup of the DMA systems.

While evaluating this solution a few years ago, we learned that such a failover takes up to 30 min (depending on the size of the DMA). This is why we decided to not go for the 1+1 setup...

Did the SW has been improved internally, so this switch move is significant faster now?

We now have the need to find a solution for some setups, where we need to have the DataMiner available in the following situations:

  1. During some cluster updates
  2. Other general maintenance (Windows server updates , etc.)
  3. When one agent is making some problems – we need to move devices (at least important once.)

This is something we do not need for the entire setup, but we would need this only to cover some critical devices/Elements.

Is there a architecture available, which would sort this also in a fast and reliable way (switchover < 10 min)

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Christian,

Our Failover switching has definitely improved over the years! I would recommend updating your agents (or requesting a pair of demo licenses) to try out the functionality, as ultimately it will indeed depend on your system size/configuration.

For element availability, you can create elements in both agents, but keep the elements on one agent offline. When the time comes that the "active" agent needs to go down for maintenance/updates, you can stop the elements in the active agent and start them in the "backup" agent, and thus they should be available. Just make sure both agents are on the same network and have the same firewall rules, and it should work out!

If you have any more questions, definitely feel free to reply here, I'm sure there's more solutions available if needed.

Cheers!

Just adding that it might be of interest to also read through following post, where the roadmap topic ‘Element swarming’ is explained.

HI Rodrigo,
the Element swarming feature looks like what we are searching for ;-).
Is there already a timing / rough estimate for this feature completion available?

regards!
