For Generic Ping tool, which provides better overall performance?

Using Generic Ping tool, is there any difference in load or performance when trying to ping monitor all elements (500) in my Dataminer System.

  • Set a single Ping element on one DMA to ping all 500 devices?
  • Set one Ping element on each DMA to ping 250 elements each?
  • Set multiple ping elements on each DMA to limit each Generic Ping element to 25 IPs, 20 generic ping elements total?

Is there any benefit or impact to the different configurations?

Hi Steve,

Spreading the load across different DMAs and elements is generally a good idea, since polling 250 devices will usually take less time than polling 500. In this way, the total effort is distributed.

That said, other considerations come into play. For example, if the goal is to measure connectivity and network latency specifically from a given DMA server to those 500 devices, then distributing the ping elements across multiple DMAs would not make sense.

Therefore, there isn’t a single answer to your question—it depends on the actual purpose of the monitoring, and the problem cannot be framed solely in terms of performance.
