Cube Launcher – auto download of latest client version

Hi, this question is in the context of DataMiner 10.4.0.0 main release and latest version of Cube Launcher (at this point in time it is 10.5.2511...)

I would like to better understand what conditions will trigger the Cube Launcher to automatically download the latest Cube client version?

For example, after installation of the Cube Launcher, I notice that the latest Cube client version is not automatically downloaded. It also does not download after I click on > 'Cogwheel icon' > 'Check of updates'.

I notice that it is only after the following condition, that I see the latest Cube client version (10.6.x) downloaded:
(1) I have created a tile and successfully connected to a DMA (running v10.4.0.0) which means that a Cube client version has been downloaded from DMA.

(2) Start another Cube Launcher instance and click on > 'Cogwheel icon' > 'Check of updates'

(3) Pop-up window appears saying that update is successful

When I check the Client versions available, I now see a 10.4.x and a 10.6.x.

Any insights that can be provided here would be useful for customers to manage client versions on their PCs.

Hi Bing

If I understand correctly, you’re observing this behavior when performing a fresh install of the Launcher or when adding new tiles.

Anyhow, the DataMiner Cube version is determined per tile in your Launcher and depends on several factors:

  • The server version of the agent linked to that tile
  • The server’s Cube configuration (e.g. automatic selection or a forced version)
  • The Cube versions available on DataMiner.Services
  • Your connectivity to DataMiner.Services

In other words, there isn’t a single “Cube version for your Launcher.” Typically, multiple Cube versions are installed on your client, and the Launcher automatically selects the most appropriate version for each tile. This automatic selection is actually one of the Launcher’s main purposes, ensuring you can connect to each agent without worrying about version compatibility.

When adding a new tile, the initially selected version will be the one available on the server. It can take up to a day before a version check against DataMiner.Services is performed and the latest available Cube version is downloaded for that tile.

If needed, you can speed up this process by manually triggering “Check for updates”, as you mentioned. Otherwise, the Launcher will automatically update to the latest version within a day.

I hope this clarifies the behavior you’re experiencing. Feel free to ask if anything remains unclear.
