New Teleport Research: How Innovation Enables Teleport Success in a Changing Video Distribution Market

The fast and global rise of video streaming has permanently changed the traditional broadcast model, not only in the adoption of enabling and cloud-connected technologies but also in the way organizations collaborate throughout the entire supply chain.

In the past, the teleport operators served the end customers and the content providers. Today, there are many, many different players involved. Consumers may be getting content from OTT service providers that bundle content. Those providers may be relying on the cloud connection for parts of the network. There may be some 5G connections for some of the delivery. The whole relationship chain is much more complex. This evolution is going very fast, and the need for end-to-end monitoring and orchestration is very high.

The satellites still have the same advantages in serving the broadcast business: high availability, high reliability and point-to-multipoint capability. “That part did not change—it’s just becoming more complex to deliver that kind of availability and uptime. Lots of different companies now need to work together. It’s a continuous evolution,” [said Steven Soenens]. “End customers still want availability, and they will pay a premium if they want to receive it in very remote locations.”
