Introduction

DataMiner is a widely proven and globally deployed standard-off-the-shelf end-to-end multi-vendor network management (NMS) & operational support system (OSS) software platform for the broadband and media industry. From a high-level perspective, it consists of the following key software components:

  • DataMiner Agent Nodes
  • DataMiner Options
  • DataMiner Probes
  • DataMiner Product and System Connectors

DataMiner is used to manage complete broadband and media ecosystems, and interfaces with all possible and imaginable active (hardware and software) components within those high-tech ecosystems, to offer an unrivaled end-to-end perspective.  Those active components with which DataMiner typically interfaces can take many different forms and shapes, such as physical devices, complete sub-systems (e.g. through a vendor-specific EMS or orchestrator), software functions and APIs, and even transactional or synthetic service-oriented interactions.  These are all generically referred to as managed objects in this guide.

Typical deployment levels

The following paragraphs provide guidance in terms of how the different DataMiner licenses map onto the different fields of applications covered by DataMiner. From a high-level perspective, the server licenses listed in the table below are applicable to the different system domains covered by DataMiner, ranging from central core processing infrastructure all the way across transport and distribution infrastructure down to the endpoints where services are delivered. 

Note that the classifications provided below are merely guidelines, and cannot be considered a binding agreement from Skyline. As with any solution, considering the multitude of applications supported by DataMiner, it is highly recommended to obtain a committed and guaranteed commercial proposal from the Skyline Communications Sales team for the specific scope of a project, or a specific application.  This ensures that the appropriate licenses are applied, and supported by Skyline for a specific application.

DataMiner Node (DMA) licenses

A DataMiner System (DMS) consists of one or more DataMiner nodes (DMAs), interconnected by an IP network. A DMA typically manages a subset of the objects subject to monitoring and control. In other words, the DMA is the standard building block of a DataMiner System.  A single DMA is a fully operational and functional DataMiner System by itself, and multiple DMAs interconnected by an IP network behave like a single consolidated network management system towards the user (the latter referenced as a DMS or DataMiner System).  DMAs can be distributed across the operational environment, to increase the overall availability and resilience, or alternatively can be co-located at regional or central sites in a regionalized or centralized architecture. The number of DMAs is defined by the number of objects that need to be managed and the application, and their location is a matter of preference in terms of architecture.  But in any case, and any scenario, all DMAs combined automatically behave like a single consolidated system towards the user.

A DMA runs on industry-standard hardware, including both dedicated hardware servers (rack-mounted or blade servers) and virtual servers (contact Skyline Communications for guidance on hardware specifications and OS requirements).  The DMA, through the DataMiner Connectors loaded onto it, will interact with all managed objects assigned to it, and will perform all network management functions (e.g. fault management, performance management, security, reporting, correlation, automation, resource management, orchestration, etc.). 

Users can access the DataMiner System by pointing a browser to any of the DMAs in a DMS (i.e. all DMAs together behave like a single consolidated system).  The DataMiner client application (DataMiner Cube or DataMiner Cube Mobile) is launched automatically, and provides a consolidated overview of all managed objects and services in the entire DataMiner System, across all DMAs (i.e. which managed objects are visible to a user is only determined by the security access profile of the user, not by the DMA the user connects to in the DMS). There is no paid license associated with the DataMiner Cube or Cube Mobile client, and hence a DataMiner System can be accessed by any number of users or concurrent number of users. 

The standard DataMiner node (DMA) is offered in an Enterprise Edition (SLC-DMA-E) and a Professional Edition (SLC-DMA-P).  From a functional perspective both licenses are equivalent and the only difference can be found in the number of objects that can be managed with a single DMA. SLC-DMA-P can manage up to 100 objects maximum, depending on the license (5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 objects). These can be any type of objects, including those of high complexity. SLC-DMA-E can manage the highest number of objects, depending on the license (250, 500 or 1000 objects) but can only be used for approved applications (i.e. management of objects of medium and low complexity).  Therefore, a deployment for 500 managed objects can require two SLC-DMA-E0250s for one application (i.e. an application with managed objects of high complexity) while for another application it can be supported with one SLC-DMA-E0500 (i.e. an application with managed objects of medium or low complexity).  Note that in the case of the former, both SLC-DMA-E0250s can be installed on a single piece of hardware, using two virtual machines, provided of course that each of those meets the minimum compute resource specifications specified by Skyline for a DMA (e.g. CPU, memory, storage space, etc.). It is strongly advised to consult Skyline Communications for an estimation on the required number and type of DMAs for the management of a specific set of objects and/or for a specific type of application.   

At any time, additional SLC-DMA-Ps or SLC-DMA-Es can be added to his system to further expand the capacity of the overall DataMiner System. 

The following guidelines apply in this respect:

  • SLC-DMA-Ps or SLC-DMA-Es can be upgraded to a higher capacity tier (e.g. SLC-DMA-P0050 upgrade to SLC-DMA-P0100).
  • When a transition is made from SLC-DMA-P to SLC-DMA-E, or the upgrade applies to a SLC-DMA-E, then this is subject to the application being supported on SLC-DMA-Es (e.g. SLC-DMA-P0100 upgrade to SLC-DMA-E0250, or SLC-DMA-E0500 upgrade to SLC-DMA-E1000).

For SVE (System Volume Equipment) management purposes, a special DMA license is available: SLC-DMA-SVE. This platform is available free of charge, but can only manage SVE-approved objects, for which separate SVE capacity licenses (SLC-DMC-SVE) must be purchased.

Similarly, for EPM (Experience and Performance Management) purposes, a special DMA license is available: SLC-DMA-EPM.  This platform is available free of charge, but can only manage EPM objects, for separate EPM capacity licenses (SLC-DMC-EPM) must be purchased.

Note that all DMAs, including DMA-Es, DMA-Ps, DMA-EPMs and DMA-SVEs, can be combined into a single DMS, resulting into a single consolidated management platform, managing your entire operation, end to end, from service acquisition to service delivery. 

Note also that DMAs require DataMiner Connectors (SLC-DMS-DRV) for each individual object type that they need to interface with (see section on DataMiner Connectors below).

DataMiner Probe Licenses

A DataMiner Probe (DMP) is the core of a DMA, i.e. a powerful protocol engine capable of interfacing with any third-party product  or system, via any interface or any protocol, including both industry-standard protocols as well as vendor-specific / proprietary protocols. DMPs, similar to DMAs, convert any south-bound interface towards underlying objects into a uniform standard north-bound interface, supporting transparent standardized monitoring and control of those underlying objects. 

Unlike DMAs, DMPs cannot be networked together into a single system. DMPs are standalone engines, designed to manage the objects at a single location and to transcode disparate legacy and vendor-specific interfaces into standard protocols, providing additional advanced functionality such as data optimization and buffering to accommodate bandwidth-deprived and unstable communication links. DMPs are exclusively used as a mediator between managed objects on remote sites and a DataMiner System. DMPs require DataMiner connectors (SLC-DMS-DRV) for each individual object type that they need to interface with.

DataMiner Options

In addition to the standard aforementioned DMAs (SLC-DMA-E, SLC-DMA-P, SLC-DMA-EPM, SLC-DMA-SVE), required to build a DataMiner System, depending on the type of application and/or functional requirements, some functional license options may be required. The available functional options include:  

  • DMS Correlation (SLC-DMS-COR) for intelligent alarm correlation and root cause analysis based on a user-definable knowledge base.
  • DMS Automation (SLC-DMS-AUT) enabling users to create advanced automation scripts for a multitude of applications, which can be triggered manually, by a time-schedule or by events.
  • DMS Reporter (SLC-DMS-REP) for advanced reporting and dashboards via web interface and email.
  • DMS Service Monitoring (SLC-DMC-SRM-MNO-xxxx) for service monitoring purposes, including E2E service view, real-time active service path, service status dashboard and drilldown to device layer. This highly sophisticated dynamic service layer sits on top of the infrastructure management layer, and subsequently traces any services, right across any vendor and technology boundaries, offering end-to-end service monitoring.
  • DMS Spectrum Analysis (SLC-DMS-SPEC) for professional RF spectrum analysis, including real-time remote access and continuous RF performance monitoring.
  • DMS OSS/BSS Gateway Inventory & Asset Manager (SLC-DMS-OBS-GW-IAM) provides fully integrated inventory & asset management capabilities, and bi-directional integration of third-party inventory & asset management solutions for automated provisioning and asset updates.
  • DMS OSS/BSS Gateway for Ticketing (SLC-DMS-OBS-GW-TCK) provides trouble ticketing functionality, and enables immersive integrations with third-party trouble ticket solutions.
  • DMS OSS/BSS Gateway for Planned Maintenance (SLC-DMS-OBS-GW-PLM) provides planned maintenance functionality, and enables immersive integrations with third-party planned maintenance solutions.
  • DMS Infrastructure Discovery and Provisioning (SLC-DMS-APP-IDP-PCK-1/xxxx) is a suite of tools that takes care of automated and rule-based inventory discovery workflows synchronized with your central inventory database, zero-touch provisioning of inventory in DataMiner, management of element configurations, user-defined workflows to upload specific software images and system configurations to new inventory, and plug ‘n play creation of new managed elements in DataMiner, including automated generation of graphical views such as locations, buildings, floors, rooms and highly detailed rack views.
  • DMS OSS/BSS Job Manager Gateway (SLC-DMS-OBS-GW-JBM) is an OSS component that makes it possible to enter jobs in the DataMiner UI. Includes a front-end HTML5 application to enter jobs and view a list of jobs, for example jobs imported from a planning system (related to the orchestration of video feeds).

DataMiner User Interfacing

From a user perspective, DataMiner provides all the means to ensure that everybody can easily and intuitively access information contained in the DataMiner platform, whenever needed.  This is end to end, ranging from the NMS/OSS professionals working at a NOC or MCR for example, across all other people in the organization who may have a wide range of other responsibilities, all the way even to external partners of the organization.

All DataMiner Client applications and user interfaces are designed to be user-centric. They are available without any licensing constraints (i.e. DataMiner clients are available free of charge, and irrespective of the size of a DataMiner System, an unlimited number of users or concurrent users can access it). 

DataMiner provides three principal access tiers, designed for different target users:

  • DataMiner Cube is the full-fledged and fully featured principal DataMiner client application, designed for NMS/OSS professionals, whose primary responsibility is to manage and run the operation of the organization (e.g. NOC operators, MCR staff, engineering, operators, etc.). Among advanced operational management capabilities & functions designed to manage complex operations intuitively and easily end to end, DataMiner Cube also provides all the administrative functions required to set up, configure and maintain the DataMiner System itself.
    DataMiner Cube is by default included in any DataMiner System, and can be used by as many users or concurrent users as required. 
  • DataMiner Cube Mobile is a lightweight HMTL5 client user interface, which is designed for people within the same organization whose primary responsibility is not necessarily NMS/OSS-related, but who can largely benefit from being able to access the wealth of data contained in an end-to-end DataMiner System (e.g. field engineering, system engineering, finance, maintenance, help desk, management, etc.). DataMiner Cube Mobile provides access to DataMiner from different angles, such as remote monitoring & control, a dashboard perspective and a ticket perspective.
    DataMiner Cube Mobile is designed to be used on desktops, tablets and mobile platforms, across different operating systems. DataMiner Cube Mobile is by default included in any DataMiner System, and can be used by as many users or concurrent users as required.
  • DataMiner Cloud Platform offers operators the option to expand access to their DataMiner NMS/OSS platform beyond their own organization, i.e. to share real-life updated data from within their operations with third parties (such as customers, resellers, technology partners, consultants, system integrators, etc.) in a secured and easy to manage fashion.
    The DataMiner Cloud Platform (DCP) Data Sharing services (DDS) are available in different tiers, some of which are optional.

DataMiner Product/System Connectors

DataMiner Product/System Connectors (SLC-DMS-DRV) are required to interface a DMA or DMP with a specific object, i.e. a product or system from a third-party vendor. SLC-DMS-DRV are designed in an open XML format, capable of modelling any communication protocol, industry-standard or proprietary, and can be developed by anybody, including Skyline Communications as well as any other qualified third party.  For connectors delivered by Skyline Communications, one SLC-DMS-DRV license is required for each object type managed by a DataMiner System. The license cost is a fixed fee and hence independent of the number of managed objects of that specific type, and independent of the number of DMAs or DMPs.  Furthermore, Skyline Communications does not charge additional non-recurring engineering (NRE) fees for connectors that still need to be developed.  Therefore, SLC-DMS-DRV can be purchased at a fixed license fee, to interface a DataMiner System with any product or system from any vendor, irrespective of the interface required and irrespective of whether the connector already exists or still needs to be developed.

SLC-DMS-DRV-DEV-I

Category-II system connectors are applicable for medium-complexity/replicated interfacing with third-party systems.

 

SLC-DMS-DRV-SYS-III

Category-III system connectors are applicable for high-complexity/full replicated interfacing with third-party systems.

Custom Category system connectors are applicable for systems that are not industry-standard readily available.

NOTE: Based on a corporate overall agreement, you can opt to purchase all products and system connectors (with the exception of custom connectors ) as CAT-II licenses. Any purchased connector can be exchanged for a different connector as compared to potentially initially defined, on the condition that this is converted value for value (in case CAT or type changes apply) and on the condition that a purchased connector has not been delivered and development for a new connector has not started yet.

Special-Purpose Licenses

In addition to the available general-purpose production licenses, some special-purpose license arrangements are available.

Staging

All products are available as a so-called staging version. These licenses are similar in functionality and capacity to the general-purpose licenses, but are offered with a special discount, but with the explicit condition that the license is only used for staging purposes (i.e. DMAs or DMPs with staging license cannot be integrated into a regular DMS, cannot be used for the monitoring of an operational environment, and can only be used for testing, validation, demonstration, beta evaluation, etc.).  DataMiner Product/System Connectors are also available for staging purposes provided that they are available off the shelf (i.e. new connectors are not developed by Skyline Communications for staging purposes).

DataMiner Applications & Solutions

In addition to the standard core DataMiner Licenses, which allow anybody to design, build and deploy comprehensive multi-vendor end-to-end network management and orchestration solutions, you can also opt to license DataMiner Solutions from Skyline Communications (which are comprised of DataMiner Applications (SLC-DMS-APL). 

These DataMiner Solutions provide out-of-the-box technology-specific, application-specific or vendor-specific DataMiner Solutions, enabling operators to deploy solutions more quickly, and to leverage the extensive domain expertise of both Skyline Communications and renowned product vendor and technology partners.
